Unveiled during annual First Tee – Central Carolina youth clinic, event kicks off a week of activities supporting the PGA TOUR’s 85th annual Wyndham Championship

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Aug. 6, 2024) – Civil rights pioneers, The Greensboro Six, are being celebrated today with the unveiling of a mural at historic Gillespie Golf Course in Greensboro, N.C. The culmination of a year-long journey first announced during last year’s 84th annual Wyndham Championship, the outdoor mural, created by Brooklyn-based artist Vincent Ballentine, highlights the six men’s role in helping desegregate the game of golf while celebrating First Tee  – Central Carolina, which today calls Gillespie home.

“Just over a year ago, we stood in this exact spot and shared the story of The Greensboro Six, six civil rights pioneers who not only made history here at Gillespie but in turn, helped change the game of professional golf. This mural is our way of memorializing these heroes and sharing their story with a new generation of golfers—all of whom walk in their footsteps.”

– Ryan Wilson, CEO, First Tee – Central Carolina

“Gillespie is a special place—one that has transformed over the decades to play a special role in this community. Now, as future generations of golfers come here and learn the game, it’s my hope that this piece can serve as a reminder, sparking meaningful conversation about The Greensboro Six and how their courageous story ultimately helped to uplift this community and empower others across these great 50 states.”

– Vincent Ballentine, Artist

Sharing the Story
Following today’s mural unveiling, Wyndham Rewards, in collaboration with First Tee  – Central Carolina, announced plans for a short-form documentary detailing the story of The Greensboro Six and the creation of the mural. Under direction from two-time Emmy nominated director and writer, Eternal Polk—best known for his award-winning film, Gaining Ground: The Fight for Black Land—the film takes viewers behind-the-scenes with never-before-shared insights and interviews with surviving family members, local leaders and key community figures, among others. Slated to debut at a later date, a trailer for the film is now available at FirstTeeCentralCarolina.org/Mural-Project.

“It is an honor to help bring to life the story of The Greensboro Six and their triumph over racism and discrimination. They are an example of the power of doing good and it’s my hope their story inspires others to continue the fight for equality.”

– Eternal Polk, Director

The Legacy of The Greensboro Six
In 1955, less than one week after Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, six Black men led by Dr. George Simkins started a local movement of their own by defiantly playing a round at the whites-only Gillespie Golf Course. They were later arrested, convicted of trespassing and spent 15 days in jail. Seven years and numerous court cases later, their actions along with others led to Gillespie desegregating and later, seeing The Greater Greensboro Open (now the Wyndham Championship) become the first PGA TOUR event in the South to welcome a Black player (Charlie Sifford).

Today, Gillespie is home to First Tee – Central Carolina, a national youth development program using the game of golf to create life-changing opportunities for local youth on and off the course. It also has the distinction of being the first course in North Carolina to offer PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere), a national program leveraging golf to enhance the wellbeing of active-duty military and veterans and is one of the only courses in the Triad catering to players with spinal injuries and disabilities through adaptive equipment and free programs.

Wyndham Championship Fore! Good
Creating positive impact in the community is a hallmark of the Wyndham Championship, and Wyndham Championship Fore! Good, the tournament’s signature philanthropic platform focused on youth, education and inclusivity, helps give back to worthy causes in central North Carolina and beyond.

Once again this year, when a PGA TOUR golfer makes birdie or better on the 15th, 16th or 17th hole on Saturday and Sunday, Wyndham Rewards will donate $500 to one of the Championship’s signature charities via “Birdies Fore Backpacks.” In addition, Thursday through Sunday, should a PGA TOUR player make a hole-in-one on the par-3 16th hole, Wyndham Rewards will donate one million points to the player and an additional one million points to its Birdies Fore Backpacks charities.

Through Birdies Fore Backpacks, Wyndham Rewards works with local organizations—Backpack Beginnings, Forsyth Backpacks, Out of the Garden Project and United Way of Greater High Point—to help feed children from low-income families around the Piedmont Triad region of North Carolina. Backpacks are packed with nutritionally-sound meals, which families take home every weekend. Just $5 can feed one child for a weekend while $150 can feed a child for a school year. Fans can join Wyndham in supporting these charities with a digital donation made via QR codes placed throughout the course.

Celebrating First Tee of Central Carolina and the Greensboro Six
Building on its broader efforts surrounding Wyndham Championship Fore! Good, Wyndham Rewards yesterday surprised long-time tournament philanthropic partner First Tee – Central Carolina with plans to sponsor a commemorative mural on the side of the First Tee building at historic Gillespie Golf Course.

Home to the story of the Greensboro Six—key players in the civil rights movement whose purposeful actions ultimately helped lead to the desegregation of professional golf—today, the course serves as the organization’s local headquarters. The mural is being commissioned with input and oversight from community partners and will aim to elevate the story of the Greensboro Six while celebrating not only their impact on the game of golf, but the positive impact that Gillespie, through First Tee, continues to have on the central North Carolina community today.

Added Checchio, “The story of the Greensboro Six is one that doesn’t get the attention it deserves. Their actions had a profound impact not just on Greensboro and the Wyndham Championship, which in 1961 as the Greater Greensboro Open became the first PGA TOUR event to welcome a black player, but the game of golf. Their story should be known, and it should be celebrated. It’s our hope that by commissioning this mural, we can do just that.”

In addition to unveiling its plans for the mural, Wyndham also joined with the Tournament in making an additional donation of $200,000 in support of First Tee, helping to further the organization’s mission of helping children of all backgrounds build life skills through the game of golf. Since 2007, the collective efforts of Wyndham and the Tournament have helped to raise and donate millions to the organization.

One lucky at-home fan can win one million Wyndham Rewards points

GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 3, 2021)Wyndham Rewards®, the world’s most generous rewards program spanning more than 50,000 hotels, vacation club resorts and vacation rentals, returns to Sedgefield Country Club this week as proud title sponsor of the 83rd annual Wyndham Championship, bringing with it the chance for fans at the course and at home to win their share of over 100 million Wyndham Rewards points.

“The Wyndham Championship is one of the most fan-friendly stops on the PGA TOUR, and we want this year’s tournament to be more rewarding than ever before,” said Lisa Checchio, chief marketing officer at Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. “From points for free night giveaways at the tournament to a chance to win one million Wyndham Rewards points just by watching at home, fans this year won’t just be dreaming about getting away with Wyndham, they can actually win the points to do it!”

A Return to Points Paradise
Broadcasting on Golf Channel and CBS, this year’s Wyndham Championship will transport fans to a tropical, vacation-themed oasis. Signature course elements like Club Wyndham Beach and the tournament’s iconic sand sculpture are back and joined by fan favorite spots like Margaritaville at the Wyndham, the Wyndham Rewards Earner® Card Club, the USO Patriots Outpost presented by Truist and Heroes Vacation Club and more.

Also back this year is the Wyndham Rewards Points Paradise Pavilion. Thursday through Sunday, fans are invited to participate in a four-day interactive digital scavenger hunt that will have them searching course grounds for Wyndham Rewards branded QR codes. Using their mobile phones, fans will scan each code they find, unlocking Wyndham Rewards points along the way. The more codes they scan, the more points they’ll unlock—up to a four-day total of 15,000 points—enough for a weekend away at thousands of Hotels by Wyndham. Kids are invited to play as well for a chance to win instant prizes.

At-home fans in the U.S. can also get in on the fun by participating in this year’s watch and win experience, earning up to 3,000 points—enough for a discounted hotel stay at thousands of hotels—with a chance to win the grand prize: one million Wyndham Rewards points. To play, all fans need to do is tune into the tournament Saturday on CBS and keep an eye out for one of three larger-than-life, road-trip themed, sand sculptures. Upon spotting any one of the sculptures, they should head to WyndhamRewards.com, where they can click on the Points Paradise banner and indicate on which hole they spotted the sculpture. The first 5,000 at-home fans to log on and answer correctly will earn 3,000 Wyndham Rewards points while one-lucky fan will be randomly selected to win one million Wyndham Rewards points. No purchase is necessary to enter or win.

Millions of points will be available to claim for both of the above activations and fans must be members of Wyndham Rewards, which is free-to-join, to claim any earned rewards. Wyndham Rewards points will be distributed approximately 7-10 days post tournament and must be claimed by October 31, 2022. For more details on both of the above activations, including full terms and conditions, visit www.wynpointsparadise.com.

Wyndham Rewards returns as title sponsor amid tight battle for the Wyndham Rewards Top 10

GREENSBORO, N.C. (August 11, 2020)Wyndham Rewards®, the world’s most generous rewards program spanning more than 30,000 hotels, vacation club resorts and vacation rentals, checked in to Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. this week as proud title sponsor of the 81st annual Wyndham Championship.

Known as one of the most fan-friendly stops on the PGA TOUR, this year’s tournament—which starts Thursday and runs through Sunday—puts a virtual spin on its longstanding tradition of vacation-themed fun while continuing the proud charitable work of Wyndham Championship Fore! Good, the tournament’s signature charitable platform. The shift follows the tournament’s previously announced decision to play without spectators out of an abundance of caution for players, volunteers, and tournament officials amid the evolving dynamics of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Now, more than ever, people are looking for a chance to escape, to get away from the everyday,” said Eliot Hamlisch, EVP of Loyalty and Wyndham Rewards program leader. “For many, the Wyndham Championship has always been that escape. While this year’s tournament may look and feel a little different, our hope is that it will inspire fans, reminding them of the power of travel and letting them know that when they’re ready to hit the road, Wyndham will be there to welcome them.”

Broadcasting on Golf Channel and CBS, the tournament will transport fans to a tropical oasis while offering surprise and delight, vacation-themed giveaways via various Wyndham social channels. Signature course elements include the Club Wyndham Beach, located just off the par five 15th hole and a giant, one-of-a-kind sandcastle behind the 18th green. Other course elements include an array of imagery of Wyndham’s most aspirational resorts alongside larger-than-life versions of vacation staples like a giant beach ball, flip flop, and more.

Two Distinct Travel Companies, One Amazing Rewards Program
Named the number one hotel rewards program by readers of USA TODAY, Wyndham Rewards unites the global portfolios of two of the world’s leading hospitality companies: Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest hotel franchise company, and Wyndham Destinations, the world’s largest vacation ownership and exchange company.

In recent months, both companies have debuted comprehensive health and safety initiatives designed to help protect travelers and team members—from increased frequency of cleanings of high-touch surfaces, to use of EPA-approved disinfectants, face covering requirements and new social distancing measures.

Added Hamlisch, “Whether it’s a road trip with the family to visit a favorite beach or a weekend away to explore one of our nation’s amazing national parks, we’re seeing an increased readiness to travel with an emphasis on safety. With tens of thousands of hotels, vacation club resorts and vacation rentals, wherever it is you want to go, chances are, there’s a Wyndham just 10 minutes away.”

Battle for the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 Tightens
The race to be in the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 culminates with the Wyndham Championship, the final event before the FedExCup playoffs. Recognizing the top-10 finishers in the FedExCup regular season, it offers a collective $10 million bonus with the points leader earning $2 million.

Justin Thomas finished tied for 37th at the PGA Championship and clinched the $2 million Wyndham Rewards Top 10 bonus as the FedExCup regular-season winner. Collin Morikawa, who won the PGA Championship and moved to second in the Wyndham Rewards Top 10, is not playing this week’s Wyndham Championship. Webb Simpson, third, and Sungjae Im, fifth, enter this week’s Wyndham Championship with a shot at the $1.5 million second-place bonus. In addition, Lanto Griffin (12), Sebastián Muñoz (16), Adam Long (24), Joaquin Niemann (25) and Harris English (28) are also playing the Wyndham Championship, and with a good finish, each can move into the Wyndham Rewards Top 10.

Giving Back through Wyndham Championship Fore! Good
Creating positive impact in the community is a central focus of the Wyndham Championship, and Wyndham Championship Fore! Good—the tournament’s signature philanthropic platform—helps give back to worthy causes in central North Carolina and beyond.

New to the tournament this year, when a PGA TOUR golfer makes birdie or better on holes 15, 16 or 17 during the third and fourth rounds on Saturday and Sunday, Wyndham Rewards will donate $500 to one of the Championship’s signature charities via “Birdies Fore Backpacks, donating up to a total of $100,000.

Since its creation in 2014, the program has provided more than 590,000 meals to thousands of local families.

In addition, the tournament’s popular hole-in-one competition returns to the par three 16th hole at Sedgefield. During official tournament play Thursday through Sunday, should a PGA TOUR golfer make a hole-in-one, Wyndham Rewards will donate one million Wyndham Rewards points to Birdies Fore Backpacks.

Wyndham Championship Fore! Good builds on broader efforts by Wyndham and its properties around the globe to support their local communities amid the pandemic as well as those on the front lines—providing rooms for doctors and nurses, donating supplies, and opening their kitchens to help feed those in need. Through its previously announced #EverdayHeroes program, Wyndham Rewards is also honoring essential workers, providing truck drivers, warehouse workers, grocery associates, healthcare workers, teachers and more with complimentary gold membership upgrades. Introduced for the first time this season alongside a simplified, strokes-based scoring system for regular season play, the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 offers $10 million to be split among the top-10 finishers in the final regular season FedExCup point standings.  While the first through third positions were decided last week in Memphis with Brooks Koepka taking the $2 Million top prize, nine golfers enter the Wyndham Championship with a chance to either move up or into the Wyndham Rewards Top 10.  Paul Casey enters the Wyndham Championship in eighth place in the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 and could move to fourth with a Wyndham Championship win increasing his season-ending bonus from $600,000 to $1.1 Million.  The other eight golfers would move into the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 with a Wyndham Championship victory.

Added Hamlisch, “The introduction of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 made for a thrilling regular season, all of which culminates here at Sedgefield at the Wyndham Championship.  We congratulate Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy and Matt Kuchar for taking the top-three spots last weekend and look forward to watching the rest of the story unfold this week at the Wyndham Championship.”

Wyndham Championship Fore! Good
Creating positive impact in the community has always been a central focus of the Wyndham Championship, and Wyndham Championship Fore! Good—the tournament’s signature philanthropic platform—helps give back to those in the Piedmont Triad.

This year, Wyndham will host a raffle at the pro-am pairings event featuring exciting items and once-in-a-lifetime experiences with net proceeds benefiting a host of local and regional Wyndham Championship Fore! Good charitable partners, including Birdies Fore Backpacks, The First Tee of the Triad, The Paul Tesori Foundation and The American Junior Golf Association, among others. Items include a total of 12 vacation packages to exciting destinations like Wyndham Kona Hawaiian Resort in Hawaii, Wyndham Grand Clearwater Beach in Clearwater, Fla. and Dolce Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif. as well as exciting experiences with Caesars Entertainment and Roush Fenway Racing.

Other philanthropic efforts associated with the tournament include:

  • Youth and Education– Through “Birdies Fore Backpacks,” Wyndham Rewards works with local organizations—Backpack Beginnings, Forsyth Backpacks, Out of the Garden Project and United Way of Greater High Point—to help feed children from low income families around the Piedmont Triad. Backpacks are packed with nutritionally sound meals, which families take home every weekend. Since its creation in 2014, the program has provided more than 510,000 meals to thousands of local families.
  • Community Development– One of the Wyndham Championship’s most-popular fan amenities is “Key to Wyn,” created by Wyndham Rewards to illustrate the Wyndham hospitality experience at its PGA TOUR event.  “Key to Wyn” offers tournament fans an opportunity to win fabulous prizes courtesy of title partner Wyndham Rewards.  Following the tournament, suitable elements of the structure will be repurposed and donated to Habitat for Humanity of Greater Greensboro to contribute to a new Habitat home.  In addition, Wyndham’s Executive Women’s Day returns to the tournament this year as does free admission for those who serve, including those in the armed forces, teachers and first responders.
  • Environmental Sustainability– Highlighting its commitment to preserving our natural resources, Wyndham Rewards is proud to partner with the Sedgefield Country Club, the home of the Wyndham Championship. Under the management of McConnell Golf, the historic course has taken significant steps in recent years to save energy and improve its sustainability efforts, including upgraded, energy efficient lighting and new, water efficient fixtures. In addition, Sedgefield Country Club is applying for the Audubon education and certification program to protect the valuable, natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide while improving efficiencies and minimizing the impact of golf course operations.  The Wyndham Championship, in partnership with Unifi, Inc., is also proud to commit to aggressive recycling standards.

Wyndham Rewards is an award-winning rewards program linking the global portfolios of two of the world’s leading hospitality companies: Wyndham Hotels & Resorts (NYSE: WH), the world’s largest hotel franchise company, and Wyndham Destinations (NYSE:WYND), the world’s largest vacation ownership and exchange company. Wyndham Rewards Expands PGA TOUR Presence, Introduces New $10 Million Bonus Raising the Stakes for Players Heading into the Wyndham Championship and FedExCup Playoffs.

Wyndham and PGA TOUR officials celebrate the unveiling of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. From left: Bobby Long, Chairman of the Piedmont-Triad Charitable Foundation; Eliot Hamlisch, Vice President and Leader of the Wyndham Rewards program; Jay Monahan, PGA TOUR Commissioner; Mark Brazil, Tournament Director of the Wyndham Championship; and Steve Holmes, Chairman of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts and Wyndham Destinations.

PARSIPPANY, N.J. (September 18, 2018) – Wyndham Rewards®—the world’s most generous guest rewards program spanning more than 25,000 hotels, club resorts, affiliated resorts and vacation rentals globally—today unveiled plans to expand its presence on the PGA TOUR with the introduction of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10.

A new $10 million bonus to be split among the PGA TOUR’s top 10 regular season finishers, the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 is designed to add a new layer of drama over the course of the regular season, which culminates with the Wyndham Championship, the final event before the FedExCup Playoffs.

While Wyndham has been a proud sponsor of the Wyndham Championship since 2007, this year marked the first year that Wyndham Rewards took the role of proud title sponsor following the split of Wyndham Worldwide into two separate public companies earlier this year: Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, the world’s largest hotel franchise company, and Wyndham Destinations, the world’s largest vacation ownership and exchange company and North America’s largest professionally managed rental business.

“The Wyndham Championship plays a pivotal role in the regular season as it’s the last chance players have to secure a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs,” said Eliot Hamlisch, vice president and leader of the Wyndham Rewards program. “In joining with the PGA TOUR to introduce the Wyndham Rewards Top 10, we’re not only elevating the significance of our own tournament, but also placing a premium on great golf all season long. What’s more, as the world’s most generous rewards program, we couldn’t think of a more fitting way to recognize the PGA TOUR’s best of the best than by saying, ‘You’ve earned this.’”

The Wyndham Rewards Top 10 leader will earn a prize of $2 million, followed by $1.5 million for the runner-up, with decreasing amounts based on position from there. The 10th place finisher will receive $500,000. News of the Wyndham Rewards Top 10 was shared at a PGA TOUR press event earlier today, as the organization kicks off the finale of the FedExCup Playoffs at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. The announcement was complemented with the introduction of a simplified, strokes-based scoring system for the TOUR Championship beginning next season, and the doubling of the total FedExCup bonus pool available to players, which now totals $70 million, inclusive of the prize money from the Wyndham Rewards Top 10.
