Developed with help of celebrity designer Alison Victoria, concept aligns with brand’s new aesthetic and is packed with unique features perfect for modern day group travelers

PARSIPPANY, N.J., October 24, 2019 – Super 8® by Wyndham, the world’s largest economy hotel brand, today unveiled the winning design for its first-ever shared room concept, ROOM8. Developed by Candice Buttars, an undergraduate design student at Utah State University, with support from celebrity interior designer and TV personality Alison Victoria, the concept reimagines the traditional hotel suite in an effort to accommodate a new generation of road trippers who thrive in communal spaces.

Piloting at select Super 8 locations as early as next year and anchored by unique features like vintage arcade games and individual sleeping spaces for up to four guests, the innovative room concept was sourced through the brand’s recent ROOM8 Design Challenge, which called on aspiring designers, co-living experts and urbanites to submit renderings of an original concept that would provide a functional, yet elevated experience to today’s influx of group travelers.

“Super 8 is known for being travelers’ companion on the road and the introduction of ROOM8 brings that promise to life in a whole new way,” said Mike Mueller, Super 8 Brand President. “More and more, we’re seeing groups of guests who want space to stretch out and relax, but without the sacrifice of giving up their own private sleeping space. The unique design developed by Candice and Alison is the ideal solution. Whether it’s a group of millennials, a young family or an on-the-road construction crew, ROOM8 delivers the perfect balance of privacy and community.”ROOM8 RenderingsDuring the design process, Victoria served as Buttars’ mentor and the pair worked together, one-on-one, to evolve what would become the final design.

“From the second I learned about the design challenge, I knew that I had to submit a concept,” said Candice Buttars, student and winner of the ROOM8 contest. “As a college student and aspiring designer, you dream of getting to work with a household name like Super 8 by Wyndham, let alone someone as accomplished as Alison Victoria. To take what I know, not only as a designer, but also as the target customer for this project, and be able to meld it into my vision, creating something entirely new, has been incredibly rewarding.”

Among the amenities that make ROOM8 unique:

  • A group-focused blend of digital and analog entertainment including vintage arcade games; a streaming-ready, 65-inch wall-mounted TV; cornhole boards, a foosball table and more
  • Abundant seating and an open dining layout, complete with an apartment-sized refrigerator and microwave
  • Individual sleeping spaces and beds for up to four guests
  • USB ports, AC outlets and wireless charging stations, room-wide

The creation of ROOM8 comes on the heels of the largest redesign in Super 8 brand history, a multi-year effort during which the brand’s hotels across the U.S. and Canada invested more than $140 million into room renovations, elevating the Super 8 guest experience.

Perks include working alongside interior designer and TV personality Alison Victoria and a $10,000 design fee

PARSIPPANY, N.J., JUNE 20, 2019 – Super 8® by Wyndham, the world’s largest economy hotel brand, today announced a dream opportunity for young, aspiring designers with the launch of its first-ever ROOM8 Design Challenge. Centered on re-imagining a traditional hotel suite, the challenge looks to bring a fresh perspective to shared hotel accommodations and invites creative applicants to submit original design renderings for what will eventually become the brand’s new ROOM8 (pronounced roommate) room concept.

The winning candidate will have the opportunity to refine and evolve their initial design alongside interior designer and TV personality Alison Victoria and will receive a $10,000 design fee upon successful completion of the project. The final concept will then be brought to life with a commercial-grade assortment from Wayfair Professional, Wayfair’s specialized program for business customers, before being piloted at select Super 8 hotels across the U.S. and Canada.

Available now through July 20, 2019, applicants can visit www.super8.com/ROOM8 to learn more and submit their formal application. The challenge is open to all aspiring designers, with experts in co-living—college students, graduates and urbanites—highly encouraged to apply.

“Super 8 is known for being travelers’ companion on the road and that’s a role we take very seriously,” said Mike Mueller, Super 8 brand leader and senior vice president. “Our research shows a rising group of guests who need the reliability, affordability and accessibility of a trusted hotel brand but want a space different from that of a traditional hotel room or suite. From millennials road tripping with a group of their friends to construction workers sharing a room with members of their crew, ROOM8 tackles this need head-on, allowing guests to share a room and socialize without forcing them to compromise on having their own personal space, including their own bed.”

“We’re giving aspiring designers a chance to try their hand at flipping Super 8 hotel suites across the country into modern co-living spaces for a new generation of road trippers,” said Alison Victoria, interior designer and TV personality. “This project is an exciting opportunity to incorporate the hottest global movement in travel to an iconic American brand through smart design. Our winning candidate will bring to the table a practical, space-optimizing concept that aligns seamlessly with Super 8’s newly elevated look and feel.”

Once selected, the winning designer will participate in a series of virtual consultations with Alison Victoria and Super 8, followed by a trip to New York City to meet Alison and unveil the final, evolved design. The creation of ROOM8 comes on the heels of the completion of the largest redesign in Super 8 brand history, a multi-year effort during which the brand’s hotels across the U.S. and Canada invested more than $100 million into room renovations, elevating the Super 8 guest experience.

Year-long consumer education campaign around the dangers of drowsy driving launches just ahead of Daylight Saving Time as National Sleep Awareness Month takes center stage.

PARSIPPANY, N.J., March 7, 2019 – Super 8® by Wyndham, the world’s largest economy hotel brand and trusted roadside companion, in partnership with philanthropist and actor Giacomo Gianniotti, announced today the launch of its new #JourneySafe campaign to help raise awareness and educate the public around the dangers of drowsy driving, which causes more than 100,000 crashes annually.i

The campaign kicks-off during National Sleep Awareness Month and just ahead of Daylight Saving Time (March 10), when many Americans will lose an hour of sleep. More than one out of three working Americans are already sleep deprived,ii a condition that’s only heightened by the changing of the clocks.

To spread its message to drivers across America, Super 8 is issuing a national call to action to #JourneySafe and get off of the road at the first signs of feeling drowsy. The campaign is anchored by a new PSA-style video featuring iconic dashboard accessories—a hula girl, a football bobble head and a bobbing dog—that come to life to alert drivers of the warning signs of drowsy driving. The video will air nationally across a variety of digital platforms and is anticipated to have additional extensions throughout the year, including a presence at Super 8 hotels across the country.

Super 8 is hosting the campaign and video at www.super8.com/journeysafe, where the public can get tips on how to spot signs of drowsy driving. The brand is also encouraging those who see the video to help raise awareness by sharing via their social channels using #JourneySafe and pledging not to drive drowsy.

“As America’s trusted roadside companion, Super 8 aims to stand for more than just convenience and comfort, we also want to stand for a safe journey,” said Mike Mueller, Super 8 brand leader and senior vice president. “With more than 1,700 locations across the U.S. and Canada alone, our hotels are ready and waiting when you need to pull over and rest. And the safer you are, the further you can go. Journey safe and don’t drive drowsy.”

Philanthropist and actor Giacomo Gianniotti, who like most others has experienced the signs of drowsy driving in his own day-to-day, echoed Mueller’s sentiment and shared, “Drowsy driving is a serious, yet often overlooked, issue that affects everyone, which is why I’m working with Super 8 on this important cause. It’s entirely preventable, but doing so requires us all to recognize the signs and take action when we do.”

Added Mueller, “Everyone is aware of the dangers of drunk driving, but it’s equally important to recognize drowsy driving as a threat on the road. Our hope is that this campaign helps to educate drivers, promoting greater awareness and prevention.”

Facts about drowsy driving:

  • More than 40% of drivers admit to falling asleep at the wheel at least once.iii
  • Sleep deprivation can have similar effects on your body as drinking alcohol. A drunk driver can often drive slowly and try to react, but a drowsy driver can nod off while still going fast.iv
  • Research shows that getting less than five hours of sleep and then getting behind the wheel is the same as driving drunk.v
  • Drowsy driving crashes are most common late at night and early in the morning during the body’s natural sleep period.vi

Super 8® by Wyndham today announced the donation of more than $42,000 to leading military and veteran non-profit Fisher House Foundation, following the sale of its one-of-a-kind, hotel-centric concept car ROADM8, which first made its debut at the 2018 New York International Auto Show.

Inspired by major room renovations at Super 8 hotels across the U.S. and Canada and built by industry-leading fabricators, the vehicle, which was sold via online public auction, is the latest in a series of initiatives by the world’s largest economy hotel brand to show its continued support for those who serve.

“Super 8 believes in the importance of honoring our service members and their families,” said Mike Mueller, brand leader and senior vice president for Super 8 by Wyndham. “Whether its unique initiatives like ROADM8 that provide crucial financial support to key veteran-focused partners like Fisher House Foundation or hotel-specific perks like our 15 percent off discount and reserved parking for veterans, for years our goal has been simple: find meaningful ways to give back and say thank you to those who have given so much for all of us.”

One of the nation’s leading military and veteran non-profits, Fisher House Foundation provides a no cost, “home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers. Through their Fisher House homes and programs, such as Hotels for Heroes and Hero Miles, they’ve saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $400+ million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation. To learn more, or to make a donation, visit www.fisherhouse.org.

“We’re incredibly grateful to Super 8 for their generosity and continued support of our mission,” said Ken Fisher, chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation. “Each year, thousands of military and veterans’ families take sanctuary at Fisher Houses around the world, keeping them close to loved ones at a time when it matters most. That wouldn’t be possible without donations like this. Thank you to Super 8 and all those who placed bids.”

Created from the base of a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4×4, ROADM8 is the first ever concept car from a hotel brand and was designed to evoke the warm colors, sleek finishes and hyper-local black and white art of Super 8’s newly renovated rooms. The ultimate road trip companion—just like Super 8 hotels—it features innovative amenities like an on-demand coffee maker, a built-in mini-fridge, tablet entertainment, easy USB charging and Wi-Fi, among others.

PARSIPPANY, N.J., November 1, 2018 – Super 8® by Wyndham, the world’s largest economy hotel brand, today announced it will auction to the public its critically-acclaimed, one-of-a-kind hotel-inspired concept car ROADM8 and additional Super 8-themed items, with 100 percent of the auction sales benefiting one of the nation’s leading military non-profits, Fisher House Foundation. Through its Fisher House program, the Foundation provides a no cost, “home away from home” for families of patients receiving medical care at major military and VA medical centers.

Available now through November 29th at Super8.com/ROADM8, the auction complements the brand’s existing service-member centric initiatives like complimentary reserved parking for veterans at hotels across the U.S. and Canada. What’s more, through December 10, 2018, Super 8 will increase the discount it offers service members and their families, raising it from 15 percent off the best available rate to 20 percent off plus 500 Wyndham Rewards bonus points.

“Super 8 has a proud history of honoring and saying thank you to those who serve, and we feel this is one more way for us to build upon that legacy,” said Mike Mueller, brand leader and senior vice president of Super 8. “When we launched ROADM8, we knew we ultimately wanted to use the vehicle as a means for giving back and creating a positive impact for the military community. We have no doubt that, with the help of Fisher House Foundation, which has earned stellar marks across the board for supporting veterans and their families, we’ll be doing exactly that.”

A Car with a Cause
Launched earlier this year at the New York International Auto Show, ROADM8 is the first-ever concept car created by a hotel brand. The vehicle was inspired by Super 8’s recent re-design, which is the largest in the brand’s 45-plus-year history including more than $100 million in room renovations at its hotels across North America.

Super 8 worked with industry-leading fabricators —several with ties to some of Hollywood’s most iconic vehicles— to customize ROADM8 from the base of a 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sport 4×4. Inside it evokes the warm colors, sleek finishes and hyper-local black and white art of the brand’s newly renovated rooms. It also features innovative amenities like an on-demand coffee maker, a built-in mini-fridge, tablet entertainment, easy USB charging and Wi-Fi, among others. Bidding for ROADM8 starts at $20,000 USD.

“Fisher House Foundation is proud to partner with Super 8 by Wyndham,” said Ken Fisher, chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation. “Fisher Houses can provide sanctuary for more than 1,000 families every night in 78 homes. That would be impossible without Americans across the nation, including the team at Super 8 by Wyndham, whose support helps bring military and veterans families together when they need it most. We thank Super 8 by Wyndham for their generosity and thinking of Fisher House Foundation.”

Alongside ROADM8, Super 8 is auctioning off seven additional items, giving fans a chance to bring their favorite aspects of the brand home with them like bedding and photography from the brand’s newly redesigned rooms, multi-night stay packages and vintage postcard art sure to delight any travel-enthusiast’s art collection. Starting bids for these items range from $25 to $50 USD each.

Since inception, the program has saved military and veterans’ families an estimated $400+ million in out of pocket costs for lodging and transportation.

Fisher House Foundation also operates the Hero Miles Program, using donated frequent flyer miles to bring family members to the bedside of injured service members as well as the Hotels for Heroes program using donated hotel points to allow family members to stay at hotels near medical centers without charge.  The Foundation also manages a grant program that supports other military charities and scholarship funds for military children, spouses and children of fallen and disabled veterans. www.fisherhouse.org
